What is a VIN?

VIN stands for vehicle identification number. It is a code that is also a serial number. The 17-character code is put on to every vehicle when it is manufactured. Each part of the VIN describes information about a vehicle. Starting with the country it was manufactured in, the manufacturer , type of vehicle / engine, year it was made, and finally the last 6 identify the serial number or unit number of the vehicle.

Where To Find It

The VIN is located in various locations on a vehicle. The easiest is on the driver side of the windshield on the bottom corner closes to you. Other locaitions include the door pillar next to the handle, or on older cars you will also find it on the drivers door frame where the hinges are. Looking on a motorcyccle? That VIN is usually found by looking on the neck of the handle bars. On some brands, it will be on the frame near the motor.

The first three of every VIN number uniquely identify the manufacturer and country of origin. This is called the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI).
